World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) President Chungwon Choue met with International Olympic Committee (IOC) counterpart Thomas Bach to discuss the path to Tokyo 2020.

The South Korean spoke with the German about preparations for the Games in the Japanese capital in four years' time.

The sport will be aiming to build on a successful Games at Rio 2016 in August.

A global television audience of nearly 400 million people watched the action in the Brazilian city, according to a report.

South Korea and China topped the taekwondo medal standings at Rio 2016 with two golds apiece.

Taekwondo in Tokyo will take place at the Makuhari Messe venue, with the sport also due to debut at the Paralympic Games.

Choue and Bach also discussed the WTF's various initiatives to promote peace.

The main vehicle for this is the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation (THF), which aims to boost the lives of refugees worldwide by introducing them to the sport.

Choue officially announced his plan to establish the THF in his speech at the UN headquarters in New York City on the 2015 International Day of Peace.

Projects are underway in Jordan, Turkey, Nepal and Rwanda, with plans for Ethiopia and Colombia.
