Compound archery is scheduled to make its debut on the Pan American Games programme at Lima 2019, the sport’s world governing body has announced.

The continental event becomes the second of its kind to include the compound bow, following in the footsteps of the Asian Games which held competition in the discipline at Incheon 2014.

"After a few years of negotiation with the Pan American Sports Organization and the Lima 2019 Organising Committee, we are delighted to confirm the inclusion of the compound bow in the 2019 Pan American Games," said World Archery Americas President Maria Emma Gaviria.

"José Quiñones, President of the Peruvian Olympic Committee, visited Medellín to watch the final matches of the Archery World Cup stage in 2016, which was a great opportunity for him to see what archery, and compound in particular, is all about.

"It is our job now to help compound athletes across the continent prepare for this historic event to effectively demonstrate why compound archery, as well as recurve, has a place in multi-sport Games."

Lima 2019 will include individual compound competitions for eight men and eight women - for a total of 16 archers - and a mixed team event.

The qualification system for both recurve and compound competitions is currently under review.

Compound competition featured on the programme of the World Games for the first time in 2013, when Colombian city Cali played host.

In March of last year, World Archery launched an investigation into the sport's exclusion from the Lima 2019 Parapan American Games programme after they told insidethegames they were given "no reason" for the decision.

The Americas Paralympic Committee (APC) and Lima 2019 confirmed a record list of 17 sports for the event following a three-day meeting in the Peruvian capital.

Badminton, shooting and taekwondo will make their Parapan American Games debut at Lima 2019, but organisers removed archery from the programme.

Archery was included at Toronto 2015 and has featured at every edition of the Paralympic Games.

The 2019 Pan American Games are scheduled to take place from July 26 to August 11, while the Parapan American Games are set to be held from August 21 to September 1.

Archery was introduced to the Pan American Games in 1979.
