The 34-year-old triumphed 7-6, 2-6, 6-4 to set up a last-eight encounter with fourth-seeded Frenchman Nicolas Peifer, who received a bye.

Also booking their place in the quarter-finals was South Africa’s Evans Maripa, a 6-1, 0-6, 6-1 victor at the expense of The Netherlands’ Tom Egberink.

Awaiting him in the next round is number one seed Stephane Houdet, who like fellow countryman Peifer received a bye.
