South Africa stormed to a clean sweep of the men's podium on home soil as the International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Cup season began in Cape Town.

Richard Murray led home Olympic bronze medallist Henri Schoeman and Wian Sullwald on a magical day for the host nation, with his winning time 51min 33sec.

Schoeman came home eight seconds later with Sullwald clocking 51:56.

Murray's victory came despite a time penalty for dropping his helmet outside of the box during transition two.

A large leading group emerged following the swim and it remained that way during the cycling leg.

It was all Murray during the run as he held off the challenge of his compatriots to win his home event at the third time of asking.

"Third time’s a charm they say," he said.

"When I heard about that penalty though, I thought it was a 15 second penalty and I knew the gap to Henri was not that big, so I was pressed.

"That was the hardest I pushed myself in the first race of the season ever."

In the women's race there was a British 1-2 as Lucy Hall clocked 59:34 to pip compatriot Jessica Learmonth who finished in 59:35.

Ai Ueda of Japan came home third in 1:00:04.

Hall, who topped a World Cup podium for the first time, said: "It is amazing.

"I’m turning 25 next week and I always said that if I can get a World Cup podium before I am 25 then I will be happy."
