South Korea’s Kweon Youngjun beat France’s Jean-Michel Lucenay to claim the men’s individual title at the International Fencing Federation (FIE) Doha Épée Grand Prix today.

Having defeated two-time world champion Nikolai Novosjolov of Estonia 15-13 in the semi-finals, Kweon replicated the same scoreline against Lucenay to ensure top honours.

Lucenay, a member of France’s Olympic gold medal-winning men’s épée team at Rio 2016, overcame compatriot Alexandre Bardenet 15-12 in the other last-four encounter.

As the losing semi-finalists, Novosjolov and Bardenet shared the third step of the podium.

The FIE Grand Prix series features three events in each of the three weapons, foil, épée and sabre, and visits nine iconic cities around the world.

It is next due to stop in Mexican city Cancún for sabre from December 16 to 18.

Other than the Olympics and Fencing World Championships, the Grand Prix is the most valuable event on the FIE calendar in terms of ranking points.

The women’s individual final in Doha is due to take place tomorrow.
