The IOC have confirmed 2024 Candidate Cities have been permitted to use airline activations in the national and international promotion phase ©Budapest 2024

Airline sponsorships have been permitted by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to take place outside the designated international promotion phase of the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games bid process.

Both Budapest 2024 and Paris 2024 have signed up airlines to support their campaigns, with both hoping the partnerships will help to garner international support.

Air France became an official supplier of Paris 2024 in June and Wizz Air started a partnership with the Budapest bid in October.

Both bids have had their logo and signage emblazoned on their partners’ planes as they seek to raise awareness of their efforts to stage the Games.

The three candidate cities – Budapest, Los Angeles and Paris – are only allowed to promote their bid nationally at this present time.

International promotion of the bids is permitted from February 3.

When contacted by insidethegames, the IOC confirmed the bidding cities had been permitted to utilise airline activations in both the national and international phase.

"In line with the IOC’s wish to provide the cities with increased flexibility for the use of their logo and to strengthen brand awareness, it was decided that there could be airline sponsorship activations within certain parameters during both the national and international promotion phases," an IOC spokesperson told insidethegames.

When announcing their partnership with Air France, Paris 2024 stated a selection of the company's planes would display their logo on 10,000 flights during the campaign.

This included long-haul Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 flights to Asia, the Americas, Africa and Oceania, and medium-haul A320 Airbus flights to Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

A marketing campaign designed to endorse the values and culture of French sport was also part of their partnership, along with promotion of the bid in in-flight magazines and in airport lounges worldwide.

After their agreement with Wizz Air, Budapest 2024 revealed their logo livery would be used on the most popular routes of the company’s network.

They claimed the conviction in Budapest’s bid would be shared with Wizz Air’s growing passenger community over the coming year, across 450 routes from 26 bases, connecting 130 destinations in 38 countries.

"As an airline with its roots in Hungary, we are proud to contribute to building and further promoting the Budapest brand internationally," József Váradi, Wizz Air chief executive, said.

"Wizz Air’s aircraft with Budapest 2024 livery design will help create international buzz and inspire people to visit Budapest as we continue to grow capacity and expand our route network."

Los Angeles 2024 do not have a partnership with an airline to date.

The IOC is due to elect its chosen host city at its Session in Lima on September 13.
