The United States’ Lee Kiefer beat compatriot Nicole Ross to claim the women’s individual title at the International Fencing Federation (FIE) Turin Foil Grand Prix.

Having defeated world number one Arianna Errigo of Italy 15-11 in the semi-final, the 2011 world bronze medallist registered a 15-8 victory over her countrywoman at the Palasport Ruffini.

Ross had earlier managed a 15-11 semi-final win over Italy’s Alice Volpi, who shared the third step of the podium with fellow home favourite Errigo.

Victory for Kiefer ensured the first FIE Grand Prix triumph of her career having finished runner-up to Errigo twice last season.

"I feel very excited, very surprised, because Nicole, Arianna, and Volpi are all amazing competitors," said the 22-year-old, who is ranked second in the world.

"It’s just amazing to be on the podium with them."

The men’s individual final is scheduled to take place tomorrow.

Local hero and world number two Daniele Garozzo will be the main draw for the home crowd after winning the Olympic gold medal in Rio de Janeiro in August.

The man he beat in the final, Alexander Massialas of the US, is also likely to be in contention.

The FIE Grand Prix series features three events in each of the three weapons, foil, épée and sabre, and visits nine iconic cities around the world.

Following Turin, the series stops in Qatar’s capital Doha for the épée from December 9 to 11 and Mexican city Cancún for sabre from December 16 to 18.

Other than the Olympics and Fencing World Championships, the Grand Prix is the most valuable event on the FIE calendar in terms of ranking points.
