Gold Coast 2018 have unveiled a new range of merchandise for the Commonwealth Games, including plush toy versions of the koala mascot Borobi.

The bright blue mascot - whose name is the indigenous Yugambeh language word for a koala – will be available in small and large versions.

The smaller version is 20 centimetres in height and will cost AUD$25 (£14/$18/€17), with the 30cm toy priced at AUD$40 (£23/$29/€27).

A total of 60 merchandise products are now available as part of the range, including tee-shirts, polo shirts, hoodies, caps, commemorative pins, keyrings and outback leather hats.

The first batch of the mascot toys have gone on sale at the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary store, with a percentage of the proceeds for the sale of Borobi set to be donated to their Hospital Foundation.

This is as a result of an agreement to support koala rescue and conservation.

"This is another significant milestone for GOLDOC (Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation) on the road to Gold Coast 2018," said Mark Peters, Gold Coast 2018 chief executive.

"We are really proud of this merchandise range, in particular the Borobi mascot range which features plush toys, a backpack and cap which will no doubt be very popular with children.

"This range of merchandise has been designed to suit all ages."

Organisers have also unveiled their official online shop, which they hope will grow to have over 500 different products in the build-up of the Games, due to take place from April 4 to 15 in 2018.

Gold Coast 2018 claim the online shop marks the next phase of their retail plans, which will see products sold at dedicated shops and via other retail outlets.

Outlets will be opened in airports from mid-2017, before a Broadbeach superstore and Surfers Paradise store are opened next December.

Matevents PTY, a new company set up to provide an extensive range of merchandise for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, hold the exclusive licensing and retail rights for the event.

They were chosen in June following a selection process carried out by Gold Coast 2018, who sent out invitations for expressions of interest from Queensland-based companies back in September.

The company, based in Adelaide, has appointed a range of sub licensees to produce the Gold Coast 2018 merchandise range, with organisers promising that 50 per cent of companies are based in South East Queensland.
