UK Ultimate are the National Governing Body in the United Kingdom ©UKU

World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) President Robert Rauch has hailed the recognition of UK Ultimate as the National Governing Body for the sport in the United Kingdom.

UK Ultimate were provided the recognition by each of the home country sport councils, Sport England, sportNI, sportScotland and Sport Wales.

Ultimate frisbee was recognised as a sport in the United Kingdom back in 2008.

The organisation claimed not having a formally recognised National Governing Body for a sport could be a barrier for clubs or local organisations wishing to enter into discussions about access to facilities and funding.

As a result, UK Ultimate claimed the decision was a "notable milestone in the development of the sport in the UK".

However the recognition does not guarantee UK Ultimate funding or additional support.

Rauch joined the approval of the decision, with the WFDF President highlighting the importance of having bodies recognised in each member nation.

"The formal recognition for UK Ultimate as the UK NGB is an important milestone on our way to get Flying Disc sports recognised at the highest level in each of our member countries," Rauch said.

"As recognised sports that are not on the Olympic Programme cannot obtain recognition by the British Olympic Association (BOA), UK Ultimate has now reached the highest level of national recognition possible at this point."Chinese Taipei, Czech Republic, Finland, Hong Kong China, Hungary, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States are among member associations to have been recognised by their National Olympic Committees.

The UK hosted the WFDF World Championships in London earlier this year.
