Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu secured the gold medal in the men’s singles event as he produced another superb performance in the free skate discipline on his way to the summit of the podium at the NHK Trophy in Sapporo in Japan.

Hanyu scored his second season's best of the event, the sixth and last regular season competition in the International Skating Union (ISU) Grand Prix of Figure Skating, as he posted 197.58 points.

His display on home ice handed him an overall total of 301.47 points to finish comfortably in front of the rest of the field.

It was also his first victory on the Grand Prix circuit this campaign and guaranteed him a spot at the season-ending Final in Marseille next month.

Nathan Chen of the United States claimed the silver after his routine was rewarded with 180.97 points, giving him an overall score of 268.91.

Hanyu’s compatriot Keiji Tanaka of Japan earned 167.95 in the free skate as he ended on 248.44 points.

"I am actually very relieved that I advance to the Grand Prix Final and also I was able to land the quad loop for the first time in an official [major competition] programme," the Sochi 2014 gold medallist said.

"I was certainly feeling anxious coming in but at the same time I was mentally prepared, because I was confident that I had practiced very hard.

"Additionally, this is my home turf and I was able to get a lot of support."
