An Olympic standard biathlon track is to be constructed in Bakuriani in Georgia, the country’s Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili has revealed.

The facility, being built in partnership with French engineering consultancy firm ABEST, comes amid plans to make potentially hosting the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in the nation a more realistic possibility.

An investment of GEL 796,500 (£272,000/$333,000/€303,000) for the track will be provided, according to Kvirikashvili, who became Prime Minister in December of last year.

A ice hockey venue, also set to be built in Bakuriani, is among other Government ideas being put forward in a bid to further develop the region’s sporting infrastructure.

The neighbouring town of Borjomi, around 30 kilometres from Bakuriani, has also been earmarked for the construction of Olympic standard facilities.

It is hoped this will help the resorts become a year-round tourist destination as part of an ongoing Government initiative.

The Prime Minister, previously Minister of Foreign Affairs, has claimed the plans are a "very serious and considerable" step in helping to achieving their goal.

The town of Bakuriani, located 180km from capital city Tbilisi, is one of Georgia’s most famous ski resorts.

It is Georgia’s most popular winter sports destination as the resort offers dozens of Alpine slopes and cross-country trails, as well as skiing and snowboarding.

Plans to build a biathlon facility there have continually been shelved due to the political issues the country has faced over the past few decades.

Georgia was under the rule of the Soviet Union until declaring independence in 1991.

The country has never won a Winter Olympic medal of any colour.
