The International Judo Federation (IJF) has signed a new four-year partnership deal with Hakuhodo DY Media Partners of Japan.

The deal, for broadcasting and a selection of marketing rights will cover the four years running up to the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo, the sport’s spiritual home.

The federation is also preparing its application for team judo events to be added to the Olympic programme, starting at Tokyo 2020.

IJF President Marius Vizer told insidethegames here that the application would be for two team events, one for women, one for men.

"I am convinced that team events can bring more value to the judo events on the Olympic programme," Vizer said.

Judo is to be staged in 2020 at the famous Budokan venue in central Tokyo.

The sport is embarking on a new four-year strategy, including programmes to promote its core values to children and other practitioners, and sharp increases in prize money.

According to Vizer, from 2017 prize money in all World Championships will be $1 million (£81 million/€91 million), up from $500,000 (£409,000/€459,000).

A new Open World Championship is also to be introduced, with the inaugural event at Marrakech in Morocco.

Promotional initiatives include a series of short films illustrating how judo can improve lives in a variety of countries ranging from Japan to Cuba, Hungary to Zambia.

On the new broadcasting partnership, Vizer said the deal could "make judo grow bigger".

"I am convinced that this partnership will bring the right benefit to Hakuhodo DY Media Partners and the right promotion to our sport and its values," he added.

Kenichiro Yokomizo, general manager of Hakuhodo’s sports division, said: "We do want to promote judo globally.

"We believe that through our partnership we can achieve that goal…

"This partnership will be an example for judo as well as for other sports worldwide."
