It follows the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) meeting in Lausanne in which discussions took place on lessons learnt from this summer's Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Five new federations representing baseball and softball, skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing joined karate and the 28 other Olympic sports at the meeting.

The five will be members of ASOIF up to 2020, although a separate admission process will then take place for the 2024 Games.

“We have always had the vocation of being an Olympic sport," said Espinós.

"Since we are convinced that we will give added value to the Olympic movement, we are thrilled to participate in events such as this ASOIF meeting. 

"We expect to have an active and rewarding membership in this highly important association for us."

The meeting at the Olympic Museum aimed to share "experience and feedback" following the Brazilian Games.

It focused on responses to questionnaires filled-in following the Games.

Improving communications channels and working out how best to implement a greater and clearly defined involvement of the International Federations in the delivery of the Games was one theme discussed, insidethegames understands.

Another proposal involved a possible move to an event model in which an event director combines the roles of venue and sports manager.
