Iranian powerlifter Siamand Rahman has been voted the best male athlete of the month for September after producing a world record lift to win the men's over 107 kilograms event at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

The lift of 310kg, which roughly equates to the weight of two baby elephants or a Siberian tiger, came on the back of him clearing the bar at 305kg for the gold medal.

Rahman, whose mark stood at 296kg prior to Rio 2016, received 64 per cent of the public votes.

Colombian swimmer Carlos Serrano was second having marked his Paralympic debut by winning three medals, including securing gold in a world record time in the men’s 100 metres breaststroke SB7 event.

Third was Belarus’ Ihar Boki, who left the Games as the most decorated athlete after also starring in the pool.

His haul of seven medals included six golds and the 22-year-old broke two world records as well.

Also nominated were Swiss wheelchair racer Marcel Hug, Belgian table tennis player Laurens Devos and Australian wheelchair tennis player Dylan Alcott.

Hug ended his wait for a Paralympic gold medal by winning the men’s 800m T54 and marathon T54 races at the Games.

He also secured silver medals over the 1500m and 5,000m distances.

Sixteen-year-old Devos avoided dropping a set on his way to triumphing in the men’s individual class nine table tennis competition, while Alcott won the wheelchair tennis quad singles and doubles titles at the Games.

In lieu of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Allianz Athlete of the Month award for September, the honour is being separated into three different categories - best male athlete, best female athlete and best team - based on results at Rio 2016.

Nominees for the best female athlete include Iranian shooter Sareh Javanmardidodmani, triathlete Grace Norman, Nigerian powerlifter Josephine Orji, Kiwi swimmer Sophie Pascoe, Italian wheelchair fencer Beatrice Vio and Chinese swimmer Zhang Li.

Voting for that award has closed today.
