Lana Al-Jaghbeer has been replaced as secretary general of the Jordan Olympic Committee (JOC) by Nasser Majali, it has been announced in a major leadership change designed to improve the running of the organisation on the road to 2020.

Al-Jaghbeer had been the first female secretary general of any Arab National Olympic Committee on her appointment in 2008.

A precise reason has not been given for her departure.

In a short statement posted on their website, the JOC thanked Al-Jaghbeer for her "loyal service over the past eight years...during which time sport has undoubtedly taken positive steps forward".

Her tenure was crowned by the nation's first ever Olympic gold medal at Rio 2016 courtesy of taekwondo player Ahmad Abughaush.

Majali, 36, has "extensive business and management experience" working in sectors including IT, trading and financial services, according to the JOC.

He is "trained and experienced in project management, change management, monitoring and evaluation, and media and communications".

He is also billed as a keen sportsman who participates in football, softball and basketball, as well as being a keen skier.

"I would like to welcome Nasser to the Jordan sporting family and wish him well in supporting the progress and development of sport," said JOC President Prince Feisal Al-Hussein.

The change means that just two Asian NOCs have a female representatives in either of their two leadership positions.

Jacqueline Yi-Ting Shen is secretary general of the Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee and Beng Choo Low serves in a similar position on the Olympic Council of Malaysia.

Olympic Council of Asia Women and Sports Committee chair Natalia Sipovich highlighted the lack of female representation in Asian sports administration as a major concern during the organisation's General Assembly in Danang last month.
