Marisol Casado looks set to be re-elected unopposed as the President of the International Triathlon Union (ITU) after she was confirmed as the only candidate for the post today.

The Spaniard, one of only two female Presidents of Olympic sport governing bodies, is seeking a third four-year term in charge of the organisation having initially been elected in 2008.

A ballot will be held at the ITU's annual congress in Madrid on December 11 - the same city where Casado was initially elected as President.

She succeeded Canada's founding President Les McDonald to become only the second leader of the ITU, and two years later was made a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The 60-year-old was re-elected for a second ITU term in Auckland in 2012, seeing off the challenge of South Korea's Kyung-sun Yu with a comfortable 82-33 victory.

A number of other roles will also be filled at the election, with more than 90 people vying for 61 available positions in all.

The ITU always holds its elections for every position every four years, in the year of the Summer Olympics.

Five candidates are in the running for four vice-president positions, including incumbents Antonio Alvarez of Mexico and Loreen Barnett of Canada.

Current Executive Board members Shin Otsuka of Japan and Ria Nilsson Damgren are also seeking to make the step up to vice president, with Ireland's Chris Kitchen also in the frame.

Current first vice president Sarah Springman of Britain and vice president Bill Walker of Australia are not on the list of candidates this time around.

Seven candidates have put themselves forward for four Executive Board positions, including sitting members Barry Siff of the United States and South Africa's Debbie Alexander.

Jamaica's Alan Beckford, Britain's Ian Howard, Nepal's Nilendra Raj Shrestha, New Zealand's Terry Sheldrake and Austria's Julius Skamen are also in the frame.

Seats on the Technical, Credentials, Coaching, Medical and Anti-Doping, Women's, Constitution, Multisport and Paratriathlon Committees are also up for re-election in Madrid.

Thirty-two nationalities are among those standing in all.

According to ITU’s Constitution, the CVs of each candidate will be published on the ITU website on October 27, which is 45 days before Congress.

During the Congress, the ITU has arranged space and time for each Committee and Confederation to hold end of year meetings, as well as attend a gala dinner. 

The last Executive Board meeting of 2016 will also be held prior to the elections. 

The only other female President of an Olympic governing body is Britain's World Curling Federation head Kate Caithness.
