Hungary’s Katinka Hosszú clinched another four gold medals to round off the Beijing leg of the International Swimming Federation (FINA) World Cup with a total of seven titles at the Water Cube.

Hosszú, winner of three Olympic golds at August’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, bettered her display yesterday to complete the event in style.

The 27-year-old claimed victory in the women’s 100m backstroke in a time of 56.56sec, touching the wall ahead of Ukrainian Daryna Zevina and Chen Jie of China, who took silver and bronze respectively.

The success for the Hungarian, nicknamed the “Iron Lady”, continued when she won the 400m freestyle by clocking 4min 01.65sec, which was enough to beat Chinese duo Dong Jie and Yawen Hou.

A second hat-trick of the meeting in the 2008 Olympic host city was then confirmed with victory in the 100m individual medley in 58.10.

Katie Meili of the United States did enough for silver, while Jamaica’s Alia Atkinson claimed bronze.

Hosszú’s fourth triumph on the second and final day in Beijing came in the 400m individual medley, where she dominated on her way to finishing at the summit of the podium with a time of 4:33.60.

“I am really happy and honoured as many swimmers here said I am their role model,” the Hungarians said.

“It is always my goal to try to motivate more people with my fighting spirit.

“I am happy I am able to do that.”

Russia’s Vladimir Morozov also enjoyed a successful outing in the Chinese capital as he took victory in the men’s 100m breaststroke and 50m freestyle races.

Morozov clocked 56.33 to edge Brazil’s Felipe Lima in the 100m breaststroke, with Yan Zibei of China adding to the host nation’s haul by finishing with bronze.

The Russian then powered to gold in 50m freestyle in 21.06, ousting Britain’s Benjamin Proud and Katsumi Nakamura of Japan to ensure he ended the event in Beijing with four crowns to his name.

Olympic champion Rie Kaneto of Japan demonstrated her prowess once again as she won the 200m breaststroke in 2:15.91.

The time from the Japanese saw her touch the wall in front of Russian Yuliya Efimova, who proved to be a controversial figure at Rio 2016 after she was cleared to compete despite having previously served a drugs ban, while Breeja Larson of the United States rounded off the podium and earned bronze.

Jeanette Ottesen of Denmark was also among the athletes to secure two gold medals today as she reigned supreme in the women’s 100m freestyle in 51.93 and the 50m butterfly in 25.16.
