Egypt's Giana Lofty won her third gold medal of the season on finals day at the Karate1 Premier League at the Sporthalle Hamburg.

The reigning world champion was in fine form in the women's under 61 kilogram kumite class and delivered an "effective and relentless" display to get the better of Chile's Javiera Gonzalez in the German city.

Today's action consisted of the showpiece bouts in all of the divisions contested and there was also a notable success for Brazil's world champion Douglas Brose, who made it back-to-back Premier League successes after his triumph on home soil in Fortaleza.

He proved to be too strong for Azerbaijan's Firdovsi Farzaliyev today and duly took under 60kg kumite honours.

Also impressive was Japan's Ryutaro Araga, winner of a third gold medal in three Premier League appearances this season in the under 84kg kumite.

He saw off Egypt's Mohamed El Kotby in the final to add to earlier successes in Paris and Salzburg.

Japan added another gold as Ken Nishimura won the men's under 75kg kumite, beating Egypt's Omar Abdel Rahman to reinforce yesterday's surprise success over Azerbaijan's European champion Rafael Aghayev in the semi-finals.

In women's competition, France's Emilie Thouy won gold in the under 55kg kumite with the World Championship silver medallist overcoming Syakilla Salni Jeffry Krishnan of Malaysia for her first Premier League title.

Irina Zaretska of Azerbaijan won the women's under 68kg kumite with a victory over American Cheryl Murphy.

Kata action saw an outstanding display from both karatekas in the men's final, with Venezuela's Pan American gold medallist Antonio Diaz getting a split decision verdict over Spain's European champion Damian Quintero.

The women's kata crown went to Italy's Viviana Botaro who triumphed over Aya Ismail of Egypt for a maiden gold medal.

Egypt and Japan both left Hamburg with eight medals, with Italy winning seven.

The season is due to conclude with the Premier League final in Okinawa in Japan next Saturday and Sunday (October 1 and 2).
