Croatian Olympian Barbara Matić put her Olympic Games disappointment behind her at her home International Judo Federation (IJF) Zagreb Grand Prix as she won the gold medal in the women's under 70 kilograms division at the Dom Sportova.

The IJF World Tour event is the first major tournament to take place post-Rio 2016, where Matić was defeated in her opening contest by Puerto Rico's María Pérez.

In Zagreb, however, it was a different story as Matić won her home event for the first time as she delighted her fans with her third career Grand Prix victory.

She beat Poland's Katarzyna Klys,  who was given a shido penalty for passivity after two minutes, which proved to be the decisive moment of the scoreless final.

The first bronze medal was claimed by Bosnia and Herzegovina teenager Aleksandra Samardzic, who beat Anna Bernholm of Sweden, with a waza-ari.

The he second was won by Slovenian Anka Pogacnik, who overcame Szabina Gercsak of Hungary.

The under 63kg event was won by Poland's Karolina Talach, who had the measure of Russia's Diana Dzhigaros in the final.

Talach took advantage of a half-hearted sode-tsurikomi-goshi attempt for a yuko score which settled the contest at the end of the four minutes.

The first bronze medal was won by Austria's world number 50 Magdalena Krssakova against Agata Ozdoba of Poland in the first contest between them.

The second bronze was won by 22-year-old Israeli Rotem Shor, as she beat Slovenia's Andreja Leski.

In men's competition, Budapest Grand Prix silver medallist Dmytro Kanivets of Ukraine showed why he was the top under 73kg seed in Zagreb as he won all four of his contests to register his first IJF Grand Prix victory.

Kanivets defeated Sweden's Tommy Macias in the final as Kanivets hunted down his opponent to eventually score a yuko from a committed ashi-waza attack.

Russia's Arbi Khamkhoev claimed one of the bronze medals in this event as he beat Israel's Tohar Butbul.

The second was won by 19-year-old Sukhrob Tursunov of Uzbekistan, who stopped Kosovo's Akil Gjakova.

In the other men's weight class of the day, Alan Khubetsov won Russia’s first gold medal of the tournament as he beat Hungary's Laszlo Csoknyai in the under 81kg final.

Csoknyai was overwhelmed as he lost to the 23-year-old by a waza-ari from a yoko-otoshi, having already been behind to a yuko.

The first bronze medal was won by Damian Szwarnowiecki of Poland as he conquered his team-mate Jakub Kubieniec.

The other was claimed by Aslan Lappinagov of Russia, who submitted Serbia's Bojan Dosen.
