Serbia's Laslo Suranji fired his way to the Parlaympic Games gold medal in the men's 50 metres rifle three positions final for SH1 shooters at the National Shooting Center in Rio de Janeiro.

He finished with a winning score of 453.7 points with the event featuring kneeling, prone and standing phases.

Suranji saw his lead cut by the United Arab Emirates’ Abdulla Sultan Alaryani but the penultimate shots of the competition proved key, the Serbian scoring 10.1 points to his rival’s 8.8.

It meant he had a comfortable cushion heading into the final shot of the event as he sealed the gold medal.

"It's unreal," said Suranji after his success.

"It took a really long time for me.

"I have trained for over 15 years and this is my first Paralympic medal.

"I am very satisfied with how I shot today.

"I was the best today."

The Serbian also praised the staff that helped propel him to the title.

"It was big teamwork, with the coaches and national coaches," he said.

"The whole year all we did was eat, sleep and shoot."

The UAE shooter described the day as a "tough challenge" after his silver medal, which followed London 2012 gold medal in the 50m rifle prone SH1.

"It was very tough today," he said.

"Everybody is ready for this competition and at a high level.

"Only one shot makes a difference in shooting today."
