Discovery Communications has signed sub-licensing deals for Pyeongchang 2018 and Tokyo 2020 with Radio and Television of Slovakia (RTVS) and Radiotelevizija Slovenija (RTV), it has been announced today.

The two broadcasters will provide coverage of both events across several platforms, including on air and online, and through Eurosport and the Eurosport Player.

RTVS and RTV Slovenija have sub-licensed the exclusive free-to-air audio visual and non-exclusive radio rights for the next two editions of the Games.

They have also secured selected digital rights for content shown on their television programmes, as well as clips of the action for news-specific shows which will follow the live broadcasts.

The agreement is the latest to be announced after Discovery penned a contract with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) last June, which will see Pan-European television sports network Eurosport become the continent's Olympic broadcaster.

“We are striving to bring the Olympic Games to more people on more screens than ever before and the agreements with RTVS and RTV Slovenija for Pyeongchang 2018 and Tokyo 2020 are a significant step forward in achieving this goal in Slovakia and Slovenia,” Kasia Kieli, President of Discovery Networks for Central and Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa, said.

“Fans will enjoy unprecedented access to the Games, with every moment available on Eurosport platforms and coverage on their traditional national broadcasters giving them the chance to enjoy the Games as they desire.”

The partnerships signed with RTVS and RTV Slovenija bring the total number of agreements penned by Discovery to 11.

It follows similar deals in Austria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, The Netherlands, Switzerland and Britain.

“We are proud that Eurosport is the natural home of the Olympic Games in Europe, already devoting half of its schedule to Olympic sports,” Jean-Thierry Augustin, President of sports and Olympic development at Discovery Networks International said.

“We are now going even further by establishing fair partnerships in our markets across Europe.

“This offers fans watching the Olympic Games a combination of their national broadcaster’s commitment to excellent Games coverage, as well as the year-round storytelling of the leading sports destination in Europe.

“Through partnerships such as with RTVS and RTV Slovenija for Pyeongchang 2018 and Tokyo 2020, we are again demonstrating the ability to work with best-in-class broadcasters in each market and offer unparalleled Olympic Games coverage.”
