The International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation (IWAS) has congratulated 14-year-old Ntando Mahlangu after he was selected on South Africa’s team for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

Mahlangu claimed four gold medals at the recent IWAS Under-23 World Games in Prague, setting two world records in the process.

The youngster took home the T42 800 metres crown in 2min 06.70sec, smashing the previous mark of 2:32.55 set by Kevin Messner of the United States.

Mahlangu then went on to clock a world record time of 52.61sec on his way to the gold medal in the 400m event.

The South African has returned to the track this weekend as he competed in the Anniversary Games at the London Stadium on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Paralympic gold medallist Richard Whitehead of Britain broke his own world record at the event on home soil, with Mahlangu recording a second-place finish in a personal best time of 23.97.

The result for the young South African boosted his hopes of earning a medal at September’s Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, which run from September 7 to 18.

“We are so proud of Ntando, he did excellently,” Johan Snyders, Founder of Jumping Kids, South Africa said during the Games in the Czech capital.

“Competing internationally remains the best way for young athletes to grow as it provides a valuable learning opportunity for both the competitor, and team, while competing at the highest level.”

Double Paralympic javelin gold medallist Zanele Situ has been named as the Flagbearer for South Africa at Rio 2016.

Situ, who won gold at Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004, will be tasked with carrying her nation’s flag at the Paralympic Games Opening Ceremony on September 7.

Both the South African Olympic and Paralympic teams were given a send-off before they head to Rio at a special dinner, held in Gauteng on Friday (July 22).
