Home favourite Chou Tien-Chen survived a scare against Hong Kong’s Vincent Wong Wing Ki to earn a spot in the men’s singles semi-finals at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Chinese Taipei Open Grand Prix Gold.

The number five seed came from behind to claim a 19-21, 24-22, 21-18 win over 10th-ranked Wong, who recorded a surprise victory over China’s Tian Houwei yesterday.

"We’ve played each other many times and we’re familiar with each other’s style," said Chou.

"He knows my weaknesses well, so I couldn’t attack comfortably.

"My physical training has been good lately and that’s why I didn’t lose my breath in the end."

Awaiting Chou in the last four is number 13 seed Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin of Malaysia, a comfortable 21-17, 21-18 victor at the expense of Thailand’s Khosit Phetpradab.

The other semi-final will see Thailand’s Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk take on China’s Qiao Bin.

Saensomboonsuk was an 18-21, 21-13, 21-17 victor over Hong Kong’s Wei Nan, while Qiao had it relatively easy in beating Chinese Taipei’s Lin Yu-hsien 21-11, 21-18.

In the women’s singles draw, Thailand’s Nitchaon Jindapol overcame third seed Sun Yu of China to reach the last four.

The eighth seed bounced back from 12-17 down in the second, closing out the match 21-19, 21-19 despite some nervous moments at the end, when she netted a serve on her first match point.

Jindapol’s next challenge is second seed Tai Tzu Ying, who delighted the home crowd with a 21-9, 21-12 success against Malaysia’s Ho Yen Mei.

The other semi-final is an all-Chinese encounter between number one seed Wang Shixian and number four seed He Bingjiao.

Wang defeated compatriot Chen Yufei 21-15, 21-9, while He proved too strong for Thailand’s Pornpawee Chochuwong in an 8-21, 21-14, 21-8 triumph.
