Construction of the proposed venue for the football finals if Rome is awarded the 2024 Olympic Games is set to be re-examined following the election of the city's new Mayor Virginia Raggi, it has been revealed.

The 52,000-capacity Stadio Della Roma is due to be built in time for AS Roma to move into for the start of the Serie A season in 2018-2019.

The stadium in the  Tor di Valle region of the city had already been hit by delays, raising the possibility that it might not be ready in time for its scheduled completion date.

The finalised dossier for the plans for the stadium was submitted to the Rome City Hall and Lazio Region last month.

Rome City Councillor Marcello De Vito, a member of the 5-Star Movement (M5S) under Raggi, has now called for the project to be re-evaluated.

De Vitto is expected to be elected as the new Speaker of the City Council when it holds its first meeting on July 5.

"We will evaluate whether to bring it to the Council floor, we'll make the necessary checks," he told Italian news agency ANSA

The stadium is estimated to cost €300 million (£250 million/$331 million), but the total bill for all the facilities and venues, including infrastructure improvement, is close to €1 billion (£828 million/$1.1 billion).

The project would be only the second to be privately owned and financed by a Serie A club, following Juventus.

De Vitto claimed that M5S are not necessarily against the project but "ask it be with the respect to the laws."

An important part of Raggi's manifesto during her election campaign was stamping out corruption on major construction projects.

Raggi is also currently against supporting Rome's bid to bid for the 2024 Olympics and Paralympics, which could potentially mean any debate on the new stadium for Roma is immaterial as far as the Olympics are concerned.

Rome 2024 director general Diana Bianchedi had told insidethegames earlier this month if the venue was ready in time they planned to host the men and women's football finals there.

AS Roma currently play at the Stadio Olimpico, which hosted the 1960 Olympics, the last occasion they were staged in Rome, and would be the centrepiece in 2024 if they are awarded again to the Italian capital.
