Spain's women's rugby sevens team booked their place at Rio 2016 today after defeating Russia in the final of the last Olympic Qualification Tournament in Dublin.

The Spaniards had cruised through the opening day without conceding a point and they were able to maintain their record by thrashing China 21-0 in the quarter-final stage of the competition at the UCD Bowl.

Kazakhstan, who had been yet to taste defeat, were also unable to live with the Spanish team as they were easily beaten 28-0.

The final would prove a far trickier affair for Spain, with Russia have performed impressively in their 19-10 triumph over Ireland in the semi-finals.

Patricia Garcia scored a brace of tries in the opening period to give Spain a 14-0 victory, before Daria Bobkova reduced the arrears before half-time by going over the Spanish line.

Barbara Pla added a third Spanish try at the start of the second period, with Bobkova’s second proving only a consolation for Russia as they fell to a 19-12 loss.

The result saw the Spanish team emulate their male counterparts by securing the only available qualifying slot in the final qualifying tournament.

Spain will join hosts Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Great Britain, the United States, Colombia, France, Fiji, Japan and Kenya at Rio 2016.

Despite missing out on an Olympic place, Ireland were able to end the competition with a consolation 17-5 victory over Kazakhstan to finish third in the tournament.
