Former Boston 2024 bid leader Steve Pagliuca has been appointed to the Board of Los Angeles 2024 to advise on "strategic planning and financing".

Pagliuca, a Bain Capital executive who also owns the Boston Celtics National Basketball Association (NBA) franchise, replaced John Fish as Boston bid leader in May 2015.

He is expected to work on a volunteer basis for Los Angeles 2024 in an international relations role, trying to help them secure votes from International Olympic Committee members.

Boston had been surprisingly chosen by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) as the American bidder ahead of Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington D.C.

By the time Pagliuca was appointed to replace Fish in May 2015, there was already widespread opposition to Boston's bid.

A revamped venue and financing plan, known as "Bid 2.0", proved unsuccessful and the bid was dropped by the USOC in July 215 after Boston Mayor Marty Walsh refused his full support.

Los Angeles was subsequently chosen as a replacement candidate.

Los Angeles, widely seen as the city that should have been chosen in the first place, has been far more successful, and has benefited from soaring public support of as high as 88 per cent.

Pagliuca was thought to have made a good impression on the Olympic Movement during his brief time at the helm and it is hoped he will be able to use that experience to help the Californian city.

Unlike most other members of the Los Angeles 2024 Board, his appointment was not officially announced by the Bid Committee, and was first reported by the Boston Globe.

The news has now been officially confirmed by Los Angeles 2024.

"Steve Pagliuca is an extremely talented business and sports leader and we're very pleased to welcome him to the LA 2024 Board of Directors," Los Angeles 2024 chairman Casey Wasserman told insidethegames.

"He has brought valuable financial and technical insight to our bid and we look forward to Steve's continued support as we seek to bring the Olympic Games back to the US for the first time in 28 years."

Pagliuca claimed he is “not at all” jaded by Boston’s Olympic failure, and that he remains confident hosting an Olympic Games can benefit a city.

“The thinking was all that time that we spent on our bid would be valuable to bring to LA,” he told the Boston Globe.

“I’m excited about our chances because we have a great committee, huge public support and Governmental support, and that’s a great combination to win the Games."

Los Angeles is bidding against Budapest, Paris and Rome.

A final choice is due to be made by the International Olympic Committee at its Session in Lima in September 2017.
