Kovács, an Olympic gold medallist in the 200 metres breaststroke at Sydney 2000 and two-time world champion, has also urged the whole of Hungary to get behind their attempt to bring the Games to the country for the first time.

The 34-year-old, an Olympic bronze medallist at Atlanta 1996, was speaking following the official announcement of the Budapest 2024 Athletes Commission.

It includes a host of Olympic and Paralympic champions, such as London 2012 pommel horse gold medallist Krisztián Berki and Tamás Darnyi, who claimed two swimming titles at both Seoul 1988 and Barcelona 1992.

Olympic fencing gold medallist Tímea Nagy, Athens 2004 skeet champion Diána Igaly and Paralympic swimmer Dóra Pásztory are also on the mmission.

The Bid Committee claim they are responsible for around 25 per cent of the 168 Olympic gold medals ever won by Hungary.

The Hungarian capital has been considered the least likely to triumph when the International Olympic Committee (IOC) membership-at-large is due to elect the chosen host city at the Session in Lima in September 2017.

Doubts about the strength of Budapest's bid have not been helped by the city being the last to launch their campaign at an event held at the iconic Citadella in April.

Budapest 2024 chairman Balázs Fürjes defended the decision to delay the unveiling of the logo and the bid, claiming it was "not at all a disadvantage".

Fürjes revealed the late launch was a deliberate ploy to get people talking about Budapest 2024 during last month’s SportAccord Convention, and Kovács also believes their choice will not be an issue come September 2017.

"We have to work hard with the vision we have got," Kovács told insidethegames.

"What I learned through sport is you have to be good at the finish so we are going to focus on that.

"We are going step by step - we just have to show what we can do and I hope everybody will like this.

"We have no experience in hosting the Games but we are on track - we will be ready for next year."

The Athletes' Commission chair is expecting to play a key role in the bid effort and feels they have the right mix of experience to help deliver the Games to the Hungarian capital.

"We are the people who have the experience and I think it is a good combination - having a businessperson or someone who was a sport leader combine with experienced athletes," Kovács added.

"I’m going to participate in many cases during the bidding process and this is a great honour for me as I have been involved with the Olympic spirit from an early age.

"Because all together with the teamwork we can do great things."

Los Angeles, Paris and Rome are the other three cities in the running for the 2024 Olympics and Paralympics.
