South Korean top seed Lee Hyun-il claimed the men’s singles title at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Thailand Masters Grand Prix Gold in Bangkok after overcoming Hong Kong’s Hu Yun in the final.

The 2006 world bronze medallist took 48 minutes to beat his opponent 21-18, 21-19 at the Nimibutr Stadium.

The challenge of Lee proved to be a step too far for third-ranked Hu, who upset second seed Son Wan-Ho of South Korea in a semi-final epic yesterday.

In the women’s singles final, number two seed Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand overcame China’s Sun Yu 21-19, 18-21, 21-17 following a match that last 87 minutes.

The 2013 world champion was pegged back by fourth-ranked Sun having taken the lead, but success for the home favourite in the decider sealed victory.

Sun’s defeat was the only disappointment of the day for China, however, as the country came away with the mixed doubles and women’s doubles titles.

World junior champions Zheng Siwei and Chen Qingchen beat Malaysia’s Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying 21-17, 21-15 to take top honours in the mixed doubles.

The women’s doubles final was an all-Chinese affair as third seeds Zhao Yunlei and Tian Qing defeated compatriots Yu Yang and Tang Yuanting 11-21, 21-12, 23-21.

Top seeded Indonesians Hendra Setiawan and Mohammad Ahsan prevailed in the men’s doubles showdown, winning 12-21, 21-15, 21-12 against South Korea’s Kim Sa-rang and Kim Gi-jung.
