Bidding for the next edition of the World Air Games has been launched following a successful event held in Dubai last year.

The Games, organised by the International Aeronautical Federation (FAI), is officially supposed to be held every four years.

There was, however, an eight-year gap between the second edition of the Games, in Spain, and the next one in Turin in 2009.

This was because the FAI decided neither the two bidders for 2005, Malaysia and Poland, would be able to hold the Games successfully.

There was then six-year gap between Turin and the 2015 edition in Dubai.

It followed the decision of Odense in Denmark to withdraw from hosting 2011.

The Games re-established themselves in Dubai last year.

The event, hosted by the Emirates Aerosports Federation, consisted of aerobatics, aeromodelling, airships, amateur-built aircraft, general aviation, gliding, helicopters, hot air balloons, microlights, parachuting, paragliding and paramotors.

The United States finished at the top of the medal table with seven gold medals, four silver and six bronze.

The FAI are now hoping it will encourage other members to bid to host the Games.

"Any FAI Members, cities, regions, event organisers or commercial bodies willing to bid to host the next FAI World Air Games are invited to contact the FAI Head Office," they said in a statement.
