San Francisco’s The Olympic Club has been chosen to stage the US Women’s Open tournament in 2021, with the golf major due to be contested from June 3 to 6.

It will be the first time the women’s Championship has visited the venue, with the course having previously staged five editions of the men’s event in its history.

In total the club has held a total of 10 United States Golf Association (USGA) Championships and its President John Espiritu expressed his delight that the USGA has chosen it as a venue.

“Hosting the 2021 US Women’s Open will be a magnificent moment for the membership and staff of The Olympic Club,” he said.

“San Francisco and The Olympic Club share a rich history of hosting USGA national championships, and we are honoured to add the US Women’s Open to our championship record.

“We look forward to 2021 and hosting the world’s best players on our world-class course.”

The club’s Lake Course, which was opened in 1927, has been selected to provide a strong test for the women’s field as they look to claim victory at the 76th edition of the competition.

Championship Committee chairman Diana Murphy believes the venue, which allowed women to become members for the first time in 1990, will provide a further boost to the tournament’s prestige.

“We are thrilled to bring the US Women’s Open to The Olympic Club, site of so many significant USGA moments, for the first time in 2021,” said Murphy, who has become only the second woman to serve as the USGA President.

“Eleven outstanding players are enshrined in the USGA Museum’s Hall of Champions by winning at The Olympic Club, and we look forward to adding the 76th US Women’s Open champion to that illustrious list.”

The 2016 staging of the event will also take place in California with South Korea’s Chun In-gee aiming to defend her title at CordeValle, from July 13 to 16.

Meanwhile the Trump National Golf Club will stage the 2017 edition, with Shoal Creek and Country Club of Charleston due to stage the 2018 and 2019 Championships.

The Champions Golf Club in Houston has already been selected for the 2020 Championship.
