Hosts Australia produced a commanding performance on the opening day of the Oceania Shooting Championships in Sydney, sweeping all three gold medals on offer to claim vital Rio 2016 quota places.

Emma Woodroofe’s women’s rifle 3 positions success was perhaps the most dramatic as she trailed early on before launching a stunning comeback to wrestle herself back into contention, finishing level with New Zealand’s Jenna Mackenzia on a total of 434.90 points.

A shoot-off decided the destination of both the gold medal and a quota spot at next year’s Olympics in Rio and it was Woodroofe who held her nerve to secure victory.

“I’m so excited to have won the quota place for Australia,” she said.

“I wasn’t too nervous because I know the standing position is my strength, so I was sure if I did what I was good at, I would get there.

“It would be awesome to go to Rio.”

Team-mate Dane Sampson took gold in contrasting style, leading an Australian podium sweep in the men’s rifle 3 positions.

He dominated proceedings from start to finish, ending on a score of 444.80 to clinch the title and with it a Rio 2016 quota berth ahead of William Godward and Daniel Clopatofsky.

Sampson will now head to the Olympic selection event in Adelaide in December hopeful of securing a place on the Australian team for Rio 2016.

“It’s a great relief to win the quota today,” he said.

“My focus now is to get selected and not just represent my country at the Olympics, but actually achieve a medal.”

The hat-trick of golds for the home country was complete when Elia Galiabovitch reigned supreme in the women’s 25 metres pistol competition as Australia sealed another podium sweep.

She edged compatriot Linda Ryan in the final.

Lalita Yauhleuskaya beat Jocelyn Lees of New Zealand in the shoot-off for bronze.

The highlight of tomorrow's action in Sydney is expected to be Australians Laetisha Scanlan, Commonwealth Games gold medallist at at Glasgow 2014, and Catherine Skinner go head-to-head in the women's trap event.
