Denmark’s women suffered their first loss at the Le Gruyere European Curling Championships in Esbjerg with the hosts falling to an 8-5 defeat against Norway.

The Norwegians blanked the first two ends against table-topping Denmark, who won 7-4 against Switzerland in the morning session, and opened the scoring in the third end when skip Kristin Skaslien hit out a Danish stone to score three points.

Skaslien had another hit in the fifth end, scoring one point to take a 4-1 lead which Norway managed to preserve through to the end.

"It feels good, it's always nice to win," said Skaslien.

"Our goal is to stay in the A-Division and to qualify for the Worlds, so that win means everything actually.

"I'm so happy.

"We made a two in the eighth end and that was the shot that made us believe we could win the game."

Norway had earlier lost 8-6 against Finland, who went on to be defeated 9-1 by Russia in the evening session.

World champions Switzerland bounced back from their defeat against Denmark to beat Germany 10-8, while Sweden followed up an 8-4 win against Estonia by overcoming Hungary 8-2.

Scotland also recorded two wins on the day, thrashing winless Estonia 10-1 after edging Germany 8-6.

In the one other game, Russia claimed an 11-5 victory over Hungary.

Meanwhile in the men’s competition, unbeaten table-toppers Norway secured an 8-3 win against Germany.

Norway took an early advantage in the second end when skip Thomas Ulsrud played an angled raise take-out to score three points for a 3-1 lead.

In the sixth end, Germany's Alexander Baumann drew for one point to reduce Norway's lead to 6-3, but it ultimately proved to be in vain.

Defending champions Sweden suffered a narrow 3-2 loss at the hands of Switzerland, while Russia beat Czech Republic 8-3.

Elsewhere, Italy and Scotland were locked together at the foot of the table and both carved out crucial victories to keep their campaigns alive.

The Italians came out 9-3 winners against The Netherlands, while Scotland defeated Finland 7-3.

Action is due to continue in the Danish coastal town until Saturday (November 28).
