The Springboks, who were on the receiving end of one of sport's biggest upsets when they were beaten 34-32 by Japan in their opening Pool B clash, have recovered to win all of their remaining games and will finish the group stage on top.

They will now play the losers of the Pool A game between Australia and Wales in the last eight, with both countries already through in that group at the expense of hosts England.

In contrast, the Americans have lost all three of their games so far after being blown away at London's Olympic Stadium.

The first South African try arrived after just four minutes as Damien de Allende strolled through some weak US defending to cross the whitewash.

Handre Pollard converted and the Eagles then missed the opportunity to get themselves on the board when Niku Kruger, who was born in South Africa, struck the posts with a penalty after Eben Etzebeth had been penalised for failing to roll away.

Nearly half-an-hour had been played before South Africa scored again, with a penalty try being awarded after the US scrum collapsed close to the line.

Pollard converted and the Springboks were well on the way to progression at 14-0 in front, which was how the score remained at half-time.

It was then carnage after the break as the South Africans turned on the style to romp home.

A third try followed swiftly after the re-start with Bryan Habana collecting a short-kick to touch down before Pollard again did the job from the tee.

The fourth try, enough for a bonus point, came courtesy of Bismarck du Plessis who bulldozed over from close range, but Pollard missed the conversion this time to leave his side 26-0 up.

The US were now falling apart and a fifth try arrived via Francois Louw after a rolling maul, with the three scores after the break coming in a lightning six minute spell.

Pollard made no mistake this time and the tries kept coming as Habana went over twice more for two converted efforts to put his side into a commanding 47-0 lead.

His hat-trick saw him draw level with New Zealander Jonah Lomu's World Cup tries record of 15.

There was no let up as Louw went over again, before Jesse Kriel and Lwazi Mvovo added their name to the try-list in the rout.

In today's other game, Namibia were pipped 17-16 by Georgia in Pool C with both sides already out.
