Global snack provider Mondelēz International showed its support for the third edition of the British Paralympic Association’s (BPA) National Paralympic Day by providing a team of volunteers to aid the smooth running of the event.

Employees of the American confectionery firm, sponsors of the BPA and Paralympics GB through to Rio 2016, were on hand to assist with crowd control as visitors had the chance to meet and have their pictures taken with Paralympic medallists.

Among the athletes at the popular “Meet the Medallist” attraction were Sophie Christiansen, a five-time gold medallist in equestrian, and Will Bayley, silver medallist in the men’s singles table tennis class seven event at London 2012.

The day also offered the public the chance to try out a variety of disability sports, including sitting volleyball, judo, equestrian, Para-canoe, boccia, cycling and gymnastics.

"Our volunteers always enjoy supporting National Paralympic Day," said Kelly Farrell, community affairs manager at Mondelēz International.

"They play a key role in the public’s involvement and enjoyment of the various sports on offer to try out.

"I’m really proud that they supported the event with such enthusiasm and dedication."

Additionally, Mondelēz International employees were responsible for supporting the events at the London Aquatics Centre as British swimmers took on the rest of the world in an elite competition.

"I really enjoyed helping out at National Paralympic Day," said volunteer Pierluigi Ratti.

"It was great to see such a wide variety of sports available for the public to try and being part of the events in the London Aquatics Centre was amazing.

"The event was a lot of fun and I would happily volunteer again next year."

Sarah Chambers, National Paralympic Day project manager at the BPA, added: "We had thousands of visitors to this year’s National Paralympic Day, therefore the support of volunteers is imperative to the event’s success.

"Thank you to all the Mondelēz International volunteers, their efforts will go a long way in supporting the association and we look forward to working with them in the future."

Last October, Mondelēz International employees completed a 969-mile bike ride raising over £30,000 ($47,000/€43,000) for the BPA.

More than 30 members of staff took part in the nine-day trek from Land's End in Cornwall to John O' Groats in Scotland with the funds raised going towards the Paralympic GB team's preparations for Rio 2016.

National Paralympic Day is supported by Spirit of 2012, a trust established by the Big Lottery Fund to recreate the spirit that radiated from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
