Home favourite Stephan Hansen was crowned as the men’s compound archery world champion after defeating India’s Rajat Chauhan in a thrilling final at the 2015 World Archery Championships in Copenhagen.

Having dispensed of the reigning champion Mike Schloesser of The Netherlands’ on Wednesday (July 29), Hansen was only one victory away from adding the senior world title to the three he had claimed a junior level, the last of which came only in June.

The 20-year-old though would be made to work hard for the title in an event took place at the Danish Parliament building Christiansborg Palace.

Chauhan, who earned in India’s first ever individual medal at the World Championships, remained  in touch with the rising Danish star in the early stages of the final.

Hansen opened up a three point advantage, firing a perfect 30 during the third end of the match, holding on to take a 147-143 victory.

“This is unbelievable,” said Hansen.

“I have never felt anything like this before.

“I’m so happy about it, a lot of people expected me to win.

“I got over my nerves and did it.”

Britain’s Adam Ravenscroft beat Colombia’s Camilo Cardona 143-141 to take the bronze medal.

It would be Hansen’s second podium finish of the day having earlierclaimed bronze with Martin Damsbo and Patrick Laursen in the men’s team event.

Iran fell behind in the early stages of the gold medal match but were able to fight back to force a tiebreaker after the scores were locked at 226-all.

Esmaeil Ebadi, Majid Gheidi and Amir Kazempour completed the come from behind victory for Iran, shooting a perfect 30 as their rivals dropped a shot and ended on 29.

The women’s team event ended with Ukraine being crowed shock winners, as 16th seeds Olena Borysenko, Viktoriya Dyakova and Mariya Shkolna defeated The Netherlands’ 226-223.

The women’s individual compound title was claimed by South Korea’s Kim Yun Hee as she defeated the United States’ Crystal Guavin 144-141 in the gold medal match.

The bronze medal was secured by Colombia’s Sara Lopez after she overcame Russia’s Mariia Vinogradova 145-138.

Hee's gold medal was South Korea’s first ever in a World Championships compound shooting event.

They did not have to wait long for a second, securing gold in the mixed team event, where Hee was paired by Kim Jong-ho.

The duo earned an early advantage over number 11 seeds Dominique Genet and Amelie Sancenot of France in the final, increasing their lead to take the title 153-146.

South Africa’s Sera Cornelius and Patrick Roux claimed the bronze, beating Russia’s Albina Loginova and Alexander Dambaev 146-141.
