Toronto 2015 is expecting ticket sales for the Parapan American Games to gather “similar momentum” to those for the recently-held Pan American Games, according to chief executive Saäd Rafi.

The 2015 Parapan American Games are set to be the biggest of their kind since their inception in 1999 with more than 1,600 athletes due to compete in 15 sports at 11 different competition venues across Toronto.

The Games, which will be broadcast in Canada for the first time, are due to officially open when the cauldron is lit at the new CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Athletics Stadium on August 7.

More than one million tickets were sold for the Pan American Games, which took place from July 10 to 26, with more than 120 events sold out.

“We’re expecting similar momentum for the Parapan Am Games, with ticket sales fast approaching 50,000 of the approximately 200,000 tickets available,” said Rafi.

“With all Parapan Am sports being qualifiers for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, excitement is building and fans are eager to see future Paralympians compete on Canadian soil.”

To show their support for the Parapan American Games, a number of Canadian swimmers recently purchased tickets at Nathan Phillips Square, which forms the forecourt to Toronto City Hall.

Zack Chetrat, bronze medallist in the men’s 200 metres butterfly at the Pan American Games where he was co-captain of the Canadian swim team, was joined by Brittany MacLean, who was part of Canada’s bronze medal-winning 4x200 metres team at the Pan American Games.

Also buying tickets were Chelsey Gotell, the five-time Paralympic gold medallist, and Julia Wilkinson, a two-time Olympic swimmer.

The athletes bought tickets for a variety of events, including the highly-anticipated athletics, wheelchair rugby, wheelchair basketball and swimming competitions.

The Toronto 2015 Parapan American Games are due to end on August 15 during a free Closing Ceremony at Nathan Phillips Square, where entertainment organised by Live Nation Entertainment, the official live music partner of the Games, will feature.
