Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President N Ramachandran has hit back at the various State Olympic Associations (SOA) and National Federations calling for him to be replaced, accusing them of launching “a deliberate smear campaign”.

In a letter to members of the IOA, Ramachandran, who also leads the World Squash Federation, said claims that voting rights of the SOAs would be reduced were “totally misleading and incorrect”.

The news represents another unsavoury element in a conflict that has plagued Indian sport for several years now and follows IOA associate vice-president Narinder Batra’s allegation that the governing body would be “ruined” by proposed provisions which are reportedly the work of Ramachandran.

Batra claimed Ramachandran is behind the formation of a committee which would look to cut the number of IOA Executive Board members to 21 and would try to form new election guidelines.

The Hockey India President has also threatened to seek more support for his campaign should an Extraordinary General Meeting, where a vote of no-confidence would potentially take place, to be held “within a month”.

Ramachandran, who came under further scrutiny for allegedly preventing other IOA officials from gaining access to International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach during a visit to India last month, has constantly refuted the opposition’s belief that he is working against their interests.

It has been reported that Federations representing badminton, basketball, bowling, fencing, handball, hockey, ice hockey, ice skating, modern pentathlon and rugby union have all supported the move to remove Ramachandran.

The Gymnastic Federation of India and Indian Weightlifting Federation are the latest governing bodies to write to IOA secretary general Rajiv Mehta.

Calls for him to be replaced have gathered pace in recent months with Madhya Pradesh, Chandigarh, Karnataka, Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh are the most recent SOAs to pursue a no-confidence motion against the IOA President.

The turmoil within the IOA could lead to the reinstatement of their suspension from the IOC, which would have disastrous consequences for Indian sport as a whole.

Indian athletes may also be unable to compete under their national flag if Ramachandran is replaced by non-IOC approved officials.
