Competitors have had the first chance to look at the medals they will be fighting for this summer at the 2015 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Swimming World Championships.

Organisers have unveiled the design to mark 50 days to go to the opening of the event in Glasgow.

It is the first time the United Kingdom has hosted the Championships, which are celebrating their 21st anniversary this year.

The competition is due to start on July 13 and run through until July 19 at Tollcross International Swimming Centre, which hosted last year’s Commonwealth Games.

The eye-catching medals feature the logo of the World Championships embossed into a rounded square, with a wave design at the top.

The back features the logo of IPC Swimming, the International Federation of Para-swimming, and the wording printed in braille as is customary.

The event will see 550 of the world’s best swimmers from 60 countries compete in the Scottish city. The competition will act as qualification for next year’s Paralympic Games.

Great Britain finished third in the medal table at the last IPC World Championships held in Canada in 2013, claiming 55 podium finishes, including 18 gold medals.

They are hoping for more success in front of a home crowd. They have named a strong team of 18 swimmers.

Paralympic champion Ollie Hynd, who won two gold medals at the 2013 IPC World Championship, will be part of the Great Britain team. The 20-year-old said: “I think the home crowd at Glasgow is going to be immense and it’s really going to push us. It is a smaller team so we need to feed off that excitement from the crowd.”
