Norway qualified for the quarter-finals of the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship after completing the round-robin stage with their undefeated record intact at the Ice Cube in Sochi.

A 10-2 win against Sweden in the morning session guaranteed Norway first place in the Group B standings, and they went on to make it nine wins out of nine by beating Brazil 10-7.

Sweden, Italy, Latvia and Finland finished tied for second place with six wins and three losses each and will all play in tomorrow’s tie-breakers.

Finland, who lost 12-11 to Latvia before winning 7-4 against China, play Sweden, 7-6 winners against New Zealand after their defeat to Norway.

The other tie-breaker sees Italy, 10-1 winners against Slovenia having lost 12-5 to Brazil, meet Latvia, who followed up their victory against Finland by earning a 12-7 win against Austria.

The winners of the tie-breakers will be ranked second or third in Group B depending on their win-loss record against one another in the round robin.

In Group A, the United States guaranteed a second place finish and automatic qualification for the quarter-finals with an 8-5 win against Denmark, before losing 9-6 to Switzerland.

Denmark, who went on to claim a 6-5 victory against the Czech Republic, will play Japan, 10-7 winners against France and 9-5 victors against Turkey, in a tie-breaker tomorrow.

Having finished with identical records of six wins and three losses, the match will decide who finishes third in the group and remains in the competition.

Group winners Russia maintained their 100 per cent record by defeating Turkey 11-5 and Australia, 8-1, while fourth-placed Switzerland preceded their win against the US by beating Slovakia 11-0 in only six ends.

Slovakia also lost to France, 7-5, while the Czech Republic beat Australia, 6-4, in the morning session.

As for Group C, Estonia qualified directly for the quarter-finals with a 10-2 win against Romania, while Hungary finished third after stealing two points in an extra end against Spain to triumph 8-6.

Although Estonia and Hungary both finished with seven wins and two losses, Estonia were ranked second by virtue of their win against Hungary earlier in the round-robin stage.

Hungary must await the winners of the tie-breakers in Group A and Group B, after which the third-placed team with the best draw shot challenge (DSC) average will qualify automatically for tomorrow evening’s quarter-finals.

The two third-placed teams with the worst DSC’s will play against one another in the quarter-final qualification game tomorrow afternoon.

Group C winners Canada finished off with a 12-3 win against South Korea, while Scotland defeated Poland 8-5 and England beat Belarus, 11-2.
