New Zealand continued their domination of the World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series by maintaining their 100 per cent record in claiming the fourth leg of series at the Westhills Stadium in Langford, British Columbia.

The also moves New Zealand a step closer to qualification for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, with their participation set to be mathematically confirmed at the next leg of the series in London, set to be held at Twickenham Stadium from May 15 to 16.

The Kiwi’s faced a rematch with Fiji in the quarter-finals, having overcome them by 38-14 earlier in the tournament, and the difference in quality between the two was present once more with New Zealand running in four tries, including a hat-trick for Portia Woodman in a 26-5 victory.

They maintained their level of performance against an English team in the semi-final, prevailing 24-14 to set up an encounter with Russia in the final.

Despite the Russian teams’ best efforts they were unable to mount a significant challenge to New Zealand and end their winning streak, as two more tries from Woodman helped New Zealand on the way to a 29-10 victory, and the fourth victory in a row in the series.

"It was a tough week for our girls as we lost one early to injury, but I'm really proud of them as always,” said Sean Horan, New Zealand coach.

"The tournament this weekend was simply outstanding.

“The support, the togetherness, the focus on players and management, the facilities and the passion, it was just outstanding."

Despite their defeat in the final Russia will leave Canada buoyed by their performances yesterday, firstly stunned Australia, who had cruised through their pool, 17-12, before earning a narrow 14-12 win over France in the semi-final phase.

With New Zealand almost assured of Rio 2016 qualification with maximum points from the series so far, Canada and Australia look well placed to join them, boasting respective hauls of 58 and 56 points from the four legs.

England’s 19-7 victory over France in the third play-off playoff increased their prospects of moving into the final Rio 2016 qualifying spot as they now lie joint fifth with the United States on 48 points, just four behind France who have 52 points.
