Azerbaijan’s female boxers continued their excellent form in the Great Silk Way Elite Boxing tournament, which acts as a Baku 2015 European Games test event, here today.

Having seen Anakhanim Aghayeva earn the women’s flyweight title on the opening night and Yana Alekseeva awarded the lightweight title yesterday, albeit due to a walkover, Anna Alimardanova and Yelena Vistropova were attempting to add to the success for the hosts in the bantamweight and light welterweight divisions respectively.

Alimardanova cruised through her contest with Russia’s Tatiana Zrazhevskaia, with the Azeri boxer awarded the fight unanimously by the judges, before Vistropova replicated the feat, defeating Uzbekistan’s Kamila Bekmetova via the judges’ scorecards.

However, the hosts’ gold rush in the women’s events was brought to an end by Belarussian fighter Viktoryia Kebikava after she overcame Leyla Javadova in the women’s middleweight division, to the disappointment of the home crowd.

The schedule also saw quarter-finals take place in several of the men’s events with local hero Teymur Mammadov, an Olympic bronze medallist at London 2012, dominating his heavyweight bout with Kristiyan Dimitrov of Bulgaria, winning 3-0 on the judges’ scorecards.

"The most important thing for me now is the European Games in June,” Mammadov said.

“This is more important than even the Olympics in Rio.

“I want to win in the motherland and see the flag fly in my own country."

Kazakhstan’s Arbek Abduganiyev defeated Gergo Savoly of Hungary to seal a spot in the heavyweight last four.

Abduganiyev’s compatriot Madiyar Ashkeyev booked himself a place in the semi-finals of the men’s welterweight division, with Azerbaijani duo Evgeniy Ramashkevich and Tamerlan Abdullayev also progressing through to the last four, with victories in their respective fights.

The evening’s fights brought about an end to the quarter-final stage of the men’s tournament, with a further two home fighters progressing to the semi-finals, as Lorenzo Sotomayor and Elnur Aliyev earning light welterweight victories.

Aliyev will have to come through a strong test in the semi-finals to remain on track for the title, as he faces double French champion Hassan Amzile, while Sotomayor is due to face Maksim Vislaukh of Belarus after he earned a unanimous points triumph over Georgia’s Amiran Margvelashvili.

Kazakhstan’s Nurbol Kalzhanov and Azamat Issakulov earned straightforward wins in the flyweight division, while Elvin Isayev of Azerbaijan and Muhammet Unlu of Turkey claimed split decision victories to progress.

The Great Silk Way Elite Boxing tournament is due to come to a close on Sunday (April 19).
