Gold Coast 2018 ParkApril 1 - A new Commonwealth Games Infrastructure Authority has been established by Queensland Premier Campbell Newman to oversee the development and delivery of facilities for the Gold Coast 2018, it was announced today.

Nigel Chamier, chairman of the Commonwealth Games Corporation, will lead the new authority, which will incorporate the Games Corporation, the Gold Coast City Council, Queensland's Commonwealth Games Minister Jann Stuckey's department and Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney's Infrastructure and State Development Department.

The Authority's job will be to ensure everything from the planning through to the development and the delivery of facilities for the Games.

Gold Coast City Council chief executive Dale Dickson and the director-generals of Stuckey's and Seeney's departments, Richard Eden and David Edwards, complete the Board.

It will liaise with Queensland's Assistant Planning Reform Minister Rob Molhoek, who will be Seeney's representatives at meetings.

"The various new and refurbished Games venues as well as the Games Village represent a significant investment from the Queensland Government," said Stuckey.

"The infrastructure will provide a lasting legacy to the state, and the Games Village will be crucial to the establishment of the Parklands area as a significant health, education and community precinct.

"I'm confident the authority will deliver the required Games infrastructure to a high standard, on-budget and on-time to show the world what Queensland can do."

Seeney warned the Games infrastructure would place a considerable workload on his department and the oversight of Molhoek would provide clear and constant direction.

"Rob's in depth knowledge of the Gold Coast and his past as a City Councillor also bring another strong element to the co-ordination that will be needed to deliver the major projects needed for the Games," he said.

"The Games Village will be delivered through Economic Development Queensland and is a vital piece of infrastructure and home for 6,500 athletes and officials during the Games.

"The Commonwealth Games Village will include housing, retail space, parks and a town square and will fast track development of the health and knowledge precinct."

Chamier, who replaced Mark Stockwell as chairman of Gold Coast 2018, has helped to shape some of Queensland's biggest projects, including the $215 million (£141 million/€167 million) restoration of City Hall in Brisbane.

"I am very passionate about the Parklands redevelopment given its significance to the Commonwealth Games and the city," said Chamier.
