Glasgow 2014_promo_July_21_July 21 - Preparations for Glasgow 2014 are set to be high on the agenda at the sixth Commonwealth Sports Ministers Meeting which will take place in London next week.

The meeting in the capital on July 25 will see the majority of Sports Ministers from Commonwealth countries focus on Glasgow 2014 which will be the biggest multi-sport sporting event in the United Kingdom following London 2012.

The one-day meeting will also see Ministers discuss the role of sport in advancing development goals, addressing social and economic challenges and promoting global public health.

Ministers will also review comprehensive policy recommendations developed by the Commonwealth to help Governments, sports bodies, intergovernmental and civil society organisations in strengthening sport-based interventions.

"Sport is not only about competition and elite athletes.

"It is also not a universal remedy to development challenges, but under the right circumstances, it can convey important democratic principles such as tolerance, solidarity, cooperation and respect," said Commonwealth deputy secretary-general Mmasekgoa Masire-Mwamba, who oversees the Commonwealth's work in this area.

"It can also foster inclusion for marginalised people and support vulnerable people, including girls and women, people with a disability, those living in conflict and people recovering from trauma.

"The recommendations will support Governments and sports bodies in member countries and position the Commonwealth as a leading site of progressive sport policy."

The last Commonwealth Sports Ministers Meeting took place in Delhi during the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

The meeting in London is likely to see Hugh Robertson, the British Minister for Sport and the Olympics, play a leading role.
