Glasgow 2014 AmbassadorsAugust 12 - British Olympic champions Jessica Ennis-Hill and Nicola Adams have today been named among five new official ambassadors for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Alongside the London 2012 heptathlon and women's boxing gold medallists, three Scots were unveiled in sprinter Allan Wells, the nation's most successful Commonwealth Games athlete, and swimming stars Michael Jamieson and David Carry.

"I am really excited about the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and delighted to be an ambassador," said Ennis-Hill, who has plans to compete at next year's Games despite currently being out of competition with an Achilles injury.

"Having a major championships in Britain so soon after the Olympics in London is brilliant and to have the support of a crowd made up of all the home nations will really help us athletes achieve our best again.

"My goal is to add the Commonwealth gold medal to my Olympic, world and European ones – the full set would be amazing."

The five new ambassadors will join Britain's greatest Olympian, cyclist Sir Chris Hoy and Rebecca Adlington, Britain's most successful Olympic swimmer for a century who have already been named as Glasgow 2014 ambassadors.

"The Commonwealth Games is an event like no other, bringing out the best in some of the world's greatest athletes," Wells, who won gold medals at the Moscow 1980 Olympics, and the Edmonton 1978 and Brisbane 1982 Commonwealth Games.

"My experience competing and winning medals for Team Scotland at two Commonwealth Games rank among the highlights of my career.

"Glasgow 2014 is an opportunity for the next generation of Scottish athletes to take centre stage and perform in front of packed stadiums full of spectators shouting their names.

"I look forward to playing a part as we continue on our journey over the next year towards what will be a special Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next year."

The announcement comes exactly one week before the launch of the ticket sales programme, which will see up to one million tickets made available to the public for events at the Commonwealth Games.

Adams, who became the first woman to ever win an Olympic boxing gold medal last year, said she is going for a double and planning to become the first woman to win a Commonwealth Games boxing medal.

"The Games are a huge deal for me, it's another opportunity to create history and win the first women's Commonwealth Games boxing medal," she said.

"Having the Games in Glasgow I know the public support will be fantastic and I'm looking forward to getting back into the ring and giving everyone something to cheer about.

"I can't wait to get involved with the rest of the build-up to Glasgow 2014."

The five new ambassadors will feature in outdoor posters from today and will feature in a television advert that will be aired across Scotland and the North of England, as well as in cinemas, from next Monday (August 19).
