Sitting-volleyball-championship 10-10-11October 10 - Ben Llewellyn-Jones, the British High Commissioner to Rwanda, has donated £3,000 ($4,705/€3,440) to the National Paralympic Committee and is currently seeking further funds to help the county's efforts to host the Africa Sub Saharan Sitting Volleyball Championships next month.

The event takes place from November 22 until 27 and is of key significance for Rwanda as it is a qualifying event for the sitting volleyball tournament at the London 2012 Paralympics.

The £3,000 will dramatically help the funding for the event, while Rwanda is also looking to send athletes to the 2012 Paralympics in the sports of athletics and power lifting.

Elie Manirora, head of the Organising Committee of the Africa Sub Saharan Sitting Volleyball Championships, praised the British High Commissioner for providing the funding and for continuing to help raise further funds.

"We sincerely appreciate his help," said Manirora.

"Not only did he donate his own money but he helped us get £3,000 which could even rise."

More than 10 countries will take part in the sitting volleyball event in the competition with Rwanda hoping to make their first Paralympic appearance in the sport.

Rwanda made its Paralympic Games debut at the Sydney 2000 Summer Paralympics where they were represented by a single competitor in the form of male swimmer César Rwagasana.

At the next Summer Paralympic in Athens in 2004, Rwanda sent two runners, with Olive Akobasenga and Jean de Dieu Nkundabera representing the country.

Nkundabera went on to win the country's first ever Paralympic medal in Greece as he took bronze in men's 800 metres race in the T46 category.

He was the country's sole representative in 2008 as he entered the same event but this time failed to advance past the heats.

Llewellyn-Jones added that he wants to see Rwanda achieve further Paralympic success in 2012 saying that said his country "is ready to host the best Olympic and Paralympic Games ever".
