Double Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu made a strong start to his bid for victory at Skate Canada, topping the men's short programme standings in Kelowna.

Hanyu arrived for the second leg of the Grand Prix of Figure Skating as the favourite and lived up to that billing with a score of 109.60 points at Prospera Place.

The Japanese star was streets ahead of the rest of the field, with Grand Prix debutant Camden Pulkinen of the United States second on 89.05 points.

Nam Nguyen of Canada did enough for third having amassed 84.08 points.

Hanyu, who said he was not entirely pleased with his short programme performance, will look to secure the gold medal when the free skating takes place tomorrow.

"It was not so great, but I felt I did my best today," Hanyu said.

"I felt calm today, but I am not sure if my calmness led to me being more focused."

Grand Prix final champion Rika Kihira leads the women's competition after finishing first in the short programme on 81.35 points.

South Korea's You Young produced a personal best to take second place with 78.22 points, while two-time world junior champion Alexandra Trusova of Russia was third on 74.40.

Russia's Aleksandra Boikova and Dmitri Kozlovskii hold the advantage in the pairs event after scoring 76.45 points.

The European bronze medallists ended the day ahead of Canadians Kirsten Moore-Towers and Michael Marinaro, and compatriots Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov.
