A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between World Taekwondo, the Taekwondo Humanitarian Federation (THF) and the International Federation Muaythai Associations (IFMA).

According to World Taekwondo, the three parties will "cooperate in the promotion of humanitarian and peace-building initiatives" under the agreement, penned at the IFMA General Assembly in Bangkok.

World Taekwondo President Choue Chung-won praised IFMA counterpart Sakchye Tapsuan for the work the organisation had done in supporting young refugees under his stewardship.

"They share many of the same values as World Taekwondo and the THF and so we are delighted to be partnering with them to further strengthen the support we are providing refugees all around the world," Choue said.

"We have made it clear that we believe all sports organisations can play a major role in addressing this refugee crisis.

"We want to work with as many organisations as possible to ensure that young refugees have easy access to a broad range of sports and benefit from the lessons and values they instil."

Tapsuan welcomed the deal with the World Taekwondo and claimed it showed the recently-rebranded organisation's commitment to working with other bodies to tackle issues affecting sport.

"With every initiative we undertake, our focus is on forming alliances and using the resources we have to work towards united goals under the Olympic charter," he said.

"We are very much looking forward to joining forces with World Taekwondo and THF under the ever-dedicated President Choue, for whom I have utmost respect."

Choue announced his plan to establish the THF in his speech at United Nations headquarters in New York City, on the 2015 International Day of Peace.

It aims to teach the sport and stage educational programmes with refugees and displaced people around the world.

Projects are up and running in countries including Jordan, Turkey, Rwanda, Djibouti, Burundi and Nepal.
