Four bowls clubs in Wales are preparing to host the World Bowls Atlantic Championships, which star tomorrow and run until May 23.

An event that has previously been hosted by Cyprus and South Africa will attract male and female bowlers from 26 countries to Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, including former world champions such as Lucy Beere of Guernsey and Darren Burnett of Scotland.

The clubs hosting games are Dinas Powys, Barry and Penarth (Windsor) and Penylan.

The club at Dinas Powis, a small village situated just outside Cardiff, was established in 1906 and has hosted the Welsh men’s singles championships since 1908.

The Barry Athletic club, close to Barry Island, was founded in 1911, as was Penarth Windsor.

Penylan is a hallowed lawn in the centre of Cardiff itself, close to the Botanic Gardens.

Welsh Bowling Association secretary Terry Hopkins told BBC Sport he hopes the event will help Wales "to put forward a bid for future World Bowls Championships".

Guernsey have selected 2018 world singles champion and 2019 world singles silver medallist Lucy Beere for both the singles and the pairs, where she will team with Rose Ogier.

Matt Le Ber will hold the banner for Guernsey in the men’s singles.

South Africa will have world medallist Colleen Piketh in the women’s singles.

Sarah Marie Nicholls will carry home hopes in the women’s singles, teaming with Ysie White in the pairs.

Daniel Salmon is the Welsh choice for the men’s singles and he will play in the pairs with Ross Owen.

England have selected Natalie Chestney in the women’s singles and she will team with Rebecca Wigfield in the pairs.

Jamie Walker will represent England in the men’s singles, and in the pairs with Steve Mitchinson.

Argentina have picked Jose Riveros and Marta Gesualto for the men’s and women’s singles,

Brazil’s team includes singles player Fernanda Spelta, while Botswana have selected Lephai Modutlwa for the women’s singles and Remmy Kebapeste for the men’s.

For Cyprus, Hazel Bagshaw will play in the women’s singles, and Robert Manson will be the men’s singles representative.
