At the inaugural partnership event between Sochi 2014 and Rosneft, one of its multi-million dollar Tier One sponsors, Federov was also revealed as the face of the Rosneft virtual game ‘"Rally Road: Sochi-Vancouver", where players can win a trip to the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games.

 

Fedorov said: "Since Sochi was awarded the right to host the 2014 Games, all Russian athletes are united by a single dream: to be crowned Olympic champion in our home country.

 

"As I have become an Ambassador, my Olympic Games begins today – being a Sochi 2014 Ambassador is as exciting as when I used to enter the ice rink for competition.

 

"However, it is a big responsibility, as I am representing the entire country."

 

Fedorov, 39, was part of the Russian team that won the silver medals at the 1998 Olympics in Nagano and the bronze in Salt Lake City four years later.

 

Last year he Fedorov, who has played for several clubs including the Detroit Red Wings and the Washington Capitals, passed Alexander Mogilny for most goals by a Russian-born hockey player.

 

The previous record held by Mogilny was 473 goals.

 

Fedorov joins a list of Ambassadors that already includes Yuriy Bashmet, an internationally acclaimed conductor, Dima Bilan, the 2008 winner of the Eurovision song contest, Svetlana Khorkina, the double Olympic gymnastics gold medallist, and Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin, the 2009 ice dancing world champions.
