Fiji are hoping to send a team of eight to compete in the taekwondo at this year's Pacific Games in Samoa, they have announced.

The target for the team will be to win the country's first gold medal.

Fiji's team manager Nimlesh Narayan claimed that training for the event, due to take place between July 7 and 20, was going well.

"Preparations are coming up slowly," he told the Fiji Sun.

"For the Pacific Games, we are looking at fielding eight athletes and two officials.

"And our aim is to win at least one gold medal for the team.

"We have competed in the past but only winning bronze and silver.

"At the moment the athletes are training six days a week and they are really happy.

"We have three international competitions before the Pacific Games."
